Concord Historic Sign.JPG
Nestled in the heart of Cabarrus County, Concord North Carolina was incorporated in 1806.  Back in 1793 the Cabarrus County government was organized, and with their first meeting in January 21, 1793, they disputed until 1795 on where exactly to put the County seat of government.  The city was to be located on 26 acres and named Concord NC, which means harmony.  They felt this name was appropriate considering the compromise that finely laid to rest after two years of negotiations!
Industry first came about in the form of the first cotton mill in 1839.  This is now known as Locke Mill Plaza at the end of Union Street.  The mill was in a perfect location with the railroad running just to the west of town.  As well a textile plant launched by Warren C. Coleman a black businessman who employed only African-Americans to work the plant.  This plant became part of the Cannon chain after his untimely death.
In the late 19th century Concord North Carolina's population doubled from 1600 in the 1880’s to over 4000 by 1890.  The city fire department was organized in the late months of 1900.  This replaced the Concord Hose and Reel Company, a volunteer outfit that had operated since 1887.  With a population over 60,000 in 2006, Concord is definitely a city on the rise.
Growth continued for the city through the 1900’s, with a population of 18,000 in 1985.  The city began annexing property and included the Phillip Morris $100 million manufacturing plant in the south of the city.  In 1991 they decided to expand their operation by $400 million, the largest expansion in state history.  Also started in the 90’s was the Concord International Business Park.
Other facilities that have come to Concord NC includes the Old Courthouse Theater, that has on occasion plays, and dinner theater acts.  310 acres was purchased just down the road from Charlotte Motor Speedway which now lays claim to Rocky River Golf Course.  Cabarrus Memorial Hospital located right beside Concord Mall, has had expansive additions since joining Duke University, and now provides some of the best medical care in the state.
Concord Mills, also known as North Carolina’s largest tourist attraction.  The Mills encompasses over 1.4 million sq. ft. of space and attracts over 15 million visitors annually.  Opened in 1999 Concord Mills includes a Bass Pro’s Shop, Circuit City, as well a Dave and Busters for entertainment.
What has truly helped Concord North Carolina in growing over the last decade is the development of Concord Regional Airport.  Now one of the 5 busiest airports in North Carolina  Many companies enjoy the convenience, without having to go to Charlotte for flights.
Through September of 2006 to September, 1 2007 the average sales price of a home in Concord is $185,000, and comes with an average of 1970 sq. ft.  Most homes in this area are on the market for an average of 77 days.  These figures have come from the Chalotte MLS and has comprised 1795 homes sold in Concord in this time frame.

S. Main St. Kannapolis.JPG

Northwest of Concord North Carolina with a population hovering around 40,000 in 2006. Early usage and meaning of the name Kannapolis comes from 2 greek words "kanna" (reeds or looms) and "polis" (city), which means "City of Looms".

A city connected by Cabarrus and Rowan County, Kannapolis North Carolina was formed in 1906 by James William Cannon. His son Charles developed Cannon Mills into the worlds largest producer of household textiles. Cannon Mill's employees lived in what was considered a Mill Village of craftsman style homes. Pillowtex Corporation purchased Fieldcrest Cannon in 1997, and soon went bankrupt. With David Murdock hoping to help revitalize Kannapolis North Carolina from the fall of the Mill, announced on September 12, 2005 plans to open the 350 acre, North Carolina Research Campus. The campus is based in the heart of Kannapolis NC where the once formidable mill stood. They have already started construction on the Central building called the David H. Murdock Core Laboratory is a 311,000 sq. ft., and will include an 80,000 sq. ft. core laboratory managed mainly by Duke University. Huntersville, NC

Welcome to the Town of Huntersville! A community that is enjoying a booming economy and explosive growth and a place where residents enjoy good schools, low crime, employment opportunities, convenient access to Lake Norman, great shopping and restaurants, Lowe's motor speedway, a public golf course and a private country club community. Huntersville is located just 10 miles north of Charlotte, where art museums and sporting events can be attended. The communities shown range in price from apx. $150,000 - $800,000The Town of Huntersville, North Carolina is a growing community, nearly 12 miles north of Charlotte. The Town's population is approximately 30,000.

Huntersville was incorporated in 1873, and is believed to have been named for Robert Boston Hunter, a large land owner and cotton farmer. the land around Huntersville was ripe for farming, and with close proximity to a railroad, the town quickly grew.

Life in Huntersville's early days was built around farming, family and church. Originally called Craighead, the Hunter family became such a large presence in the community, the town was renamed. Farmland was fenced in with split rail fences (some still remain today), and animals grazed freely. Families often shared their beef in the autumn and looked out for their neighbors. In the truest sense, Huntersville was a community.

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church was the first church built in Huntersville around 1875, and backed two local schools - the McClintock Academy and the Orr School. Both schools were similar to junior colleges and Huntersville boasts of educating a number of ministers, professional men, teachers and business leaders in the late 1800's.

As the town grew larger, so too did its business community. the Virgin Manufacturing Company, a cotton mill, encouraged the development of Huntersville's "mill town" on the east side of the railroad tracks. A brick yard business, located in both Huntersville and neighboring Cornelius, helped provide the bricks for many local buildings. Many of the older brick buildings and some remaining chimneys can still be seen today in the older section of town.

Today, older generations of Huntersville residents are mixed about the tremendous growth the town is experiencing. Many people will claim that Huntersville has always poised itself for such progress. Others reminisce about "the good old days" when traffic was easy and farmland was untouched.

It is the sense of Huntersville's past that has brought so many new residents to this town. The allure of the remaining farmland, the simple commute into the city of Charlotte and the proximity to the relatively new Lake Norman are just some of Huntersville's enticements.

Through September of 2006 to September, 1 2007 the average sales price of a home in Huntersville is $275,000, and comes with an average of 2450 sq. ft.  Most homes in this area are on the market for an average of 60 days.  These figures have come from the Chalotte MLS and has comprised 1300 homes sold in Huntersville in this time frame.

Lake Norman, NC

The Great River was named after the people who lived by it, the Catawba Indians, known in their own language as the Kawahcatawbas, "the people of the river."  As the settlers began moving into the fertile lands along the Catawba, they brought with them diseases from Europe that the Catawbas had no resistance to, and in less than 175 years, their population dwindled from over 5,000 to less than 400.

These settlers built their cabins and farmed the land beside the Catawba River, but before long they were drawn into battle against the British Crown.  In 1781, General Cornwallis proclaimed Charlotte to be "a damned hornet's nest of rebellion."  At the battle site at Cowan's Ford, General William Lee Davidson, along with a band of Catawba Valley farmers were able to slow the advance of General Cornwallis.  Early in the battle, General Davidson was shot and killed at the river bank.  A monument honoring Davidson is located near the present site of Cowan's Ford Dam, but the exact location of his demise is under the waters of Lake Norman.
After the United States became an independent nation and the Civil War left the people demoralized in spirit, the people along the Catawba were simply existing.  Ambitious James B. "Buck" Duke, president of the American Tobacco Company, saw a future in the textile industry in the Carolinas, using the waters of the Catawba to generate power needed to provide clothing for a growing nation.  Buck and his brother, Ben, set out to learn everything they could about hydroelectric power.
Dr. W. Gill Wylie, who had already experimented with hydroelectric power in South Carolina with his Catawba Power Company, soon began discussions with the Duke Brothers while tending to their illnesses.  Wylie introduced the Dukes to William S. Lee, a brilliant young engineer who was designing the Catawba Power Company's dams and power plants.  Wylie needed funding, and Duke needed power.  Duke, Lee and Wylie were looking at the larger picture ? electricity would attract business and industry to the region.
The Southern Power Company was formed and William S. Lee's dream of transforming an entire river valley into a hydroelectric system was coming true.  In 1927, the Southern Power Company became the Duke Power Company, and by 1928, ten dams were completed with a dozen powerhouses, making the Catawba "the world's most electrified river."  William Lee's grandson, Bill Lee III, had the honor of designing and completing the one final dam which would be the largest undertaking of all, creating not only the largest lake in the Duke Power system, but the largest lake in the Carolinas.
Homes, family farms, and entire towns would end up under water.  The village of Long Island, once a bustling river town with three textile mills, would be completely submerged.  Some land owners refused to sell their land, but traded it for land along the future lake.  Those who kept it long enough did very well indeed.
The ground breaking took place on September 28, 1959.  It took four years to finish the huge dam, and another two years to fill the lake.  Named after retired Duke Power President, Norman Atwater Cocke, people predicted Lake Norman to be an inland sea.  It is 34 miles long and eight miles across at its widest point.  Its surface area of 32,500 acres has 520 mile of shoreline.  Lake Norman is 760 feet above sea level, 130 feet deep at its deepest point, and holds 3.4 trillion gallons.
There are three generating plants on Lake Norman:  Cowan's Ford, the original power station; Marshall Steam Station, a coal-burning steam-electric generating station on NC 150; and the William B. McGuire Nuclear Station near the east abutment of Cowan's Ford Dam.
Those who call Lake Norman the biggest thing to happen on a river since the flood of 1916 appreciate its contribution to flood control.  Because the lake can handle enormous amounts of water flowing down from the mountains, the torrential rains of 1940 and 1970 did not create a terrorizing replay of the flood of 1916 which took lives, farms, homes, animals, crops, bridges and roads, and destroyed businesses that were never rebuilt.
The cities of Charlotte and Mooresville North Carolina rely on Lake Norman for their dependable water supply.  Duke's professional foresters manage the quality of the water, plant nearly 1.8 million new trees on the land each year, stock the lake with fish, and regularly spray the shoreline with non-chemical light oil solution to control mosquitoes.  A 2,135-acre water refuge was built below Cowan's Ford Dam to shelter migratory ducks and geese in the winter.  Duke Power provided 10 public access areas around the lake as well as 1,300 acres for duke Power State Park.
There was a time when people stood on highways around the lake offering lake lots for sale for $1,000.  There weren't many takers back then.  With the completion of I-77, the entire lake became more accessible to urban centers to the south and north.  Slowly, development began creeping north to the part of the lake that had always been agricultural.  Today in four counties that surround the lake, there are more than 25,000 residents who like calling Lake Norman home.

  Troutman, NC

In 1853, Mrs. Anne Troutman, a widow, moved with her family to a point in the forks of the Charlotte Road and the Perth Church Road and with her two sons, Jacob and Sidney. They built a home which no longer stands. The place had previously been known as Hickory Crossing. Here her sons built a shop and began making wagons and carriages.

In the late 1850´s, when the railroad was being built from Charlotte to Statesville, a construction camp was established nearby by the railroad and the place became known to railroad people as "Troutman´s". Later it was to be Troutman.

The railroad actually put Troutman on the map in addition to giving it a name. A depot was built at Troutman when the railroad was completed into Statesville and the mixed trains stopped here for passengers and to load and unload freight.

 Cornelius, NC

The town of Cornelius, the second youngest of Mecklenburg County's six incorporated towns, was founded in 1893 but not incorporated until 1905. The Town's origin has been traced by many historians to a dispute over cotton weighing.

In the late 1800's, two thriving cotton firms located in Davidson disagreed on whether an official town cotton weigher should be appointed. After a heated election was held and legislation enacted, a town cotton weigher was hired and the firm which opposed the appointment decided to relocate much of its operations just south of the Davidson town limits.

Frequently after heavy rains, the road connecting Davidson and (soon-to-be) Cornelius would become impassible. The hill leading into Davidson would become so muddy that many cotton farmers found it safer and more convenient to conduct their business just south of Davidson in a small frame building. The success of the cotton purchasing business later inspired the owners to construct a cotton mill where raw cotton could be converted into cloth. The owners of the cotton firm lacked the needed money to make the idea of a cotton mill a reality, but they knew who could provide the financial backing. Joseph Benjamin Cornelius (1833-1914) supplied the needed investment and the mill was opened. Although the Town was originally incorporated as 'Liverpool', the Town's name was soon changed to Cornelius to honor J.B. Cornelius who was the principal stockholder in the cotton mill.

The damming of the Catawba River to create Lake Norman was as influential as the cotton industry to the town's development and growth. In 1963 Duke Power created Lake Norman and provided the area with recreational opportunities and a source of hydroelectric power. The formation of Lake Norman also provided the area with choice lakeside property.

Through September of 2006 to September, 1 2007 the average sales price of a home in Cornelius is $433,000, and comes with an average of 2580 sq. ft.  Most homes in this area are on the market for an average of 87 days.  These figures have come from the Chalotte MLS and has comprised 542 homes sold in Cornelius in this time frame.
